Patriotism I don’t care where you are from, I think you should support those that are close. When I was in Long Beach I always was focused on supporting my city, and mostly the several surrounding blocks. I went against the grain and helped open the first Homeless shelter in the city. This came with much resistance from other local business’. They thought it was best to “bus the homeless to the next city, and dump them off”. I pushed forward with great success. Helping place over 700 Long beach Homeless in permanent housing in a few short years. Also helping them to find jobs. I think my impact on my little corner in the world was positive. Somewhere in the trappings of success I lost my way. Life became only about profit and loss. The strive to make more money to pay the ever growing overhead lead to making products far far away from my city. Nobody Discouraged this. I had a huge support system cheering me on. Occasionally I would hear small snips “how come your t-shirts are made in Damn China?”. I just laughed it off because where else was I suppose to make them?? This is how business is done in America! At one point I sent a highly coveted CFL frame to the Huffy Factory in China to have them bid on making them. A month later an Chinese made CFL frame showed up to my Long Beach door. I was shocked at the quality. I was expecting it to be really horrible, but it was actually super nice. Even more shocking was I could get them made for $400 each! I was blown away. I could more than double my profit margin by just sending a Purchase Order, and waiting for a shipping container of shiney new Chinese CFL frames to show up at the Port Of Long Beach. The more I thought about it? the more I said F-That. Not only do I have to explain to my amazing fab guys that their jobs have been sold out to China. I also have to look myself in the mirror and realize the I am a fraud. Instead of building and creating things in my own shop. I am just doing things purely for money. I just couldn’t do it. I told them Thanks, but no thanks. I have never told this story before. I hope it give CFL owners, and the customers that buy my products and solid Understanding the I am not doing things solely for money. I’m trying to make a small difference in the lives in my back yard.
